FOR PROFESSIONALS AND other serious photographers, nothing today says “State of the Art” more than Canon’s 1D Series. Past and present Canon models—the Canonet, F-1, AE-1, EOS Rebel, Sureshot, ELPH, Powershot—have left their legendary mark in the history of photography.
Now, standing atop Canon’s product line-up, the 1D Series has—since 2001—brought uncompromising quality to those who can’t and won’t settle for anything less than the absolute best.
Canon’s high-end offerings include the 1D, 5D, 7D, 50D, and the recently released 60D digital SLRs. But the 1D Series sits on the pinnacle of Canon’s product line-up.
From the first 1D introduced in 2001, the Series has proceeded through Mark II, Mark III, and Mark IV models. Note that each of these has its own menu tab in the top navigation bar.
Trying to figure out all the differing models in the 1D Series can be a challenge. The Table below may help. Note the timeline of 1D model introductions, by year. Also note that the 1D Series follows two tracks, according to format: Full-Frame DSLRs…and APS-H models. The full-framers carry the lower-case “s” after the “D” in the model naming.
The next logical introduction in Canon’s D Series is expected to be the 1Ds Mark IV—a full-frame DSLR that would become the most advanced Canon to date. When announced, the IDs Mark IV will immediately be added to this site.
